DigiKeys is an AUv3 compatible MIDI sequencer plugin suitable for AUM or other AUv3 compatible host applications. It functions as a pattern-based sequencer, enabling the control of external MIDI-based AUv3 instruments or the internal sample-based audio engine. With 16 channel multi-timbral capabilities, DigiKeys accepts MIDI data on each of the 16 MIDI channels and can route it to 16 internal instruments. This adaptability allows for exploration in pattern-based song crafting utilizing the DigiKeys sound engine, subsequently integrating with external MIDI-based synth engines for further development of ideas. Although initially designed for AUM, it should operate efficiently under various DAWs, depending on routing options. The benefit of using AUM lies in its boundless routing flexibility and its capability to split MIDI output for multiple AUv3 sound sources.
DigiKeys provides the ability to create looped patterns that can be sequenced into songs. Each pattern consists of 16 tracks (one for each MIDI channel) that can be up to 32 steps long. Individual tracks can adjust playback speed, transposition, and effects routings. Sequences of up to 256 patterns can be grouped into a song, associated with a specific scale so that the transpose function facilitates quick chord changes without requiring pattern redesign.
While DigiKeys was primarily developed to operate other MIDI-compatible AUv3 plugins, it is also equipped with its own internal synth engine featuring over 100 custom presets. Users who own the 4Pockets Chameleon sampler plugin will find that DigiKeys automatically integrates these instruments, simplifying the expansion of the instrument library using Chameleon.
The app incorporates a custom MIDI mixer for managing incoming/outgoing MIDI velocity levels instead of traditional audio levels, allowing the relative volumes of internal and external MIDI instruments to be controlled. Additionally, DigiKeys can function as a multi-timbral sound source with level mixing by routing MIDI data from each of the 16 incoming ports to separate instruments.
Noteworthy features include a sophisticated random pattern generator capable of utilizing random velocities, probability settings, note lengths, sub-beats, and reverse hits. It can even randomize specific notes that align with chords within the song's scale.
The recent update introduces a live matrix performance mode enabling real-time mixing of tracks from different patterns to create scenes that enhance performances. Patterns and scenes can be remotely triggered using MIDI equipment that sends basic note data on MIDI channel 16. Furthermore, a new feature allows the routing of internal sound to various output buses for applying external effects in AUM.
